Richard (‘Dick’) Maller of Leland, North Carolina passed away on September 27, 2024, at the age of 93.
Dick was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Brooklyn and Hartford, Connecticut. He owned a number of businesses, the most noteworthy of which was an eponymous dog training school and kennel. He was the longtime President of the U.S. Professional Dog Trainers Association and the Humane Commissioner for the City of Long Beach, New York. He co-authored the Simon & Schuster instructional guide 21 Days to a Trained Dog.
Dick was a colorful and larger than life figure. He was a competitive yacht racer, tennis player and coach and an owner-exhibitor of champion show dogs.
Dick proudly served in the Unite States Navy for more than three years during the Korean War. He maintained a love of the sea throughout his life.
Dick leaves behind his beloved wife of 49 years, Sheryl, his four children, Brant, Laura, Robert (‘Bob’), and Michael and their spouses, Sheryl, Rick, Lori, and Gwen, and his eight grandchildren, Zachary, Jenny, Gregory, Brigitte, Caroline, Craig, Ruby, and Winnie.
If a single phrase could summarize Dick’s 93 years on the planet, it would be that he “lived life his way”.
