Albert Raymond Meloy (1945 – 2024)

Albert “Al” Meloy, beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and educator, passed away on May 12, 2024 at the age of 78.

Born on May 30, 1945 in Akron, OH, Albert was the oldest of three children of Woodrow and Doretta Meloy.

His passion for learning and experiencing life to the fullest was evident from an early age. Al dedicated over 40 years to public education starting as a teacher and becoming a superintendent in 1987, then working for the Ohio School Boards Association until his retirement in 2011. His favorite years as an educator were spent serving as the principal of Albion High School in Albion, MI. He had a profound impact on generations of students through his
visionary leadership, support of families and communities, commitment to excellence, and belief that all students should be given the opportunity to succeed.

Al enjoyed distance running, playing handball, riding his Harley-Davidson, golfing with friends, and connecting with people wherever he went. He had boundless energy, a tenacious spirit, and a gift for making others laugh and feel loved. Above all, his greatest joy was his family.

Albert is survived by his wife, Judyth Dobbert Meloy; daughter Kelley Jones (Scott Jones) and granddaughters Jensen and Jaylyn; daughter Meagan Meloy (Patrick Clark) and granddaughter Clover; son Matthew Meloy (Elexis Meloy) and grandsons Dylan and Landon; daughter Rebecca Hawkins (Robert Hawkins) and grandsons Braxton and Monroe.

Albert will be dearly missed by his family, friends, former colleagues, and students. The family will hold a celebration of Albert’s life at a time and place to be determined. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare. https://lifecare.org/donate/

Had the pleasure of playing golf with Al and knew him for a short time but had many laughs with him.
Condolences to his family and I’d like to send off some pictures of Al as a member of our team.

So sorry to hear of Al’s passing. I had Al for a teacher at Alma High School in 1972. He was a great guy. My thoughts and prayers are with all of his family.

We met in 1968 when several teachers were hired at Alma Schools in Alma, MI. Among those hired that year were some of the most impactful educators in the district, several of whom were outstanding teachers, coaches and administrators. Al was a student favorite during his tenure as the assistant principal at Alma High School. His flamboyance, caring, involvement and dedication were keys to his success with students. Condolences to the Meloy family as they process their grief. RIP “Big Al.”

In 1968 we met when several new teachers were hired into the Alma Michigan school district. Among those who joined the rural, mid-Michigan school were outstanding teachers, fine coaches and memorable administrators. Al’s flamboyant, caring, engaging and progressive style made him a student favorite during his tenure as Alma’s high school assistant principal. Condolences to the Meloy family as they grieve the loss of their father and spouse. RIP “Big Al.”
