Prayers go out to Art’s family and many friends. Art was a true friend and inspiration to many of us as fellow cadets at CMA (Carolina Military Academy.) I have to admit I was a bit intimidated when I first met Art since he was my company commander at “A” Company and he made it clear we were going to be the best. It wasn’t long though before I came to know him as a friend you could confide in and a support person not someone to be afraid of. I have the regret as I’m sure many of us that we didn’t spend more time together after CMA days but we all moved on. We did have the occasional phone visit, especially around birthdays and other occasions and did see each other in person at one of the Maxton reunions several years ago. I could tell all those 50+ years hadn’t changed Art, still the same caring compassionate warm person I came to know at CMA many years ago. A true leader in every sense of the word!! Missed but not forgotten by those of us who knew him!!

Art Whitehill was a true friend an exceptional leader during our time at Carolina Military Academy. We lost contact after our CMA days but Art found me 40 years later and we were able to meet in 2010 at the CMA reunion in Maxton, North Carolina and several times since then. If you are lucky, you come across a person in life who impacts your life in such a positive way as Art Whitehill did for me. I will miss Art greatly. Rest In Peace my friend!

Art and I were roommates our last year at CMA. Prior to that year I did not Art that well, but we quickly became friends. I remember standing with Art, in the basement under the administration building in front of the Senior Army Office who told us our cadet rank for the following year, our last year. We reconnected after 30 plus years. Art’s brother-in-law was my neighbor and shared with Art that someone named Bryan Hovey lived down the road. What a wonderful surprise it was for me to reconnect with my old high school roommate. Since 2001 we have been able to stay connected thanks in part to the CMA website, the reunions in Maxton and on occasion having lunch together at the beach. Art was much better than me at remembering birthdays, because every year he would send a birthday wish. In high school I remember Art as having a calm nature. He was a good friend and one I learned from. I am very thankful for my years at CMA, but the most precious of those years was my last, sharing them with Art.
