Arthur “Arty” William Seabury, III of Wilmington, NC, aged 61, passed away suddenly at home on November 11, 2022. He was born on October 26, 1961, in Renton, WA (while his Father was in Vietnam) and raised in Jacksonville, NC. Arty was predeceased by his parents, Bernice Finch Seabury and Arthur William Seabury, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Susan, son Arthur “Will” William Seabury IV, granddaughter Juniper and dog, Schatzi; his step-mother Joan Barnes Seabury, sister Sherry S. Cook (Charley), brothers Bob (Kathy) and Ken (Mary) Finch; sister-in-law Cheran Harris (Farrell); nieces and nephews; step-siblings, other family and good friends too numerous to name.
In Jacksonville, Arty grew up the son of a Marine and an awesome Mom. He enjoyed camping trips, soccer, surfing, being with his brothers, and tormenting his sister. He went to Infant of Prague, then graduated from Jacksonville Senior High in 1979. He went on to UNC-Wilmington before enlisting in the US Coast Guard in 1981.
He served 4 years with the USCG, stationed initially at Governors Island, NYC, as well as other east coast posts, serving on the USCG Cutters Escape and Cape Fairweather. Arty, aka “Sting,” rose to the rank of QuarterMaster 3rd class, earning ribbons in 45 caliber and M16 marksmanship, as well as a Good Conduct Medal. He loved his time and travels in the Coast Guard and made dozens of friends along the way.
Arty returned to Wilmington in 1985 and, for over 35 years, was a Jack of all Trades – carpentry, electrical work, hurricane shutters, project supervision, facility manager, etc. He found a way to fix anything he put his mind to. Known to family and friends as a self-proclaimed “genius,” he was a constant source of advice and answers. With Muni as his home course, he was an avid golfer, enjoying years of rounds with some of his same friends each week. He loved being on the water; was a soccer fanatic; huge St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and UNC basketball fan; Blues lover, especially Eric Clapton; his favorite restaurant was Szechuan 132. Arty was a proud husband, father, grandfather and friend to anyone he met. He was a good-natured, kind man with a big smile who will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the weeks to come, with details to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a charity of your choice or The Arty Seabury Memorial Fund to help raise funds for funeral expenses and to establish a trust fund for his granddaughter, Juniper.
