Brian Henry Richardson of Southport, NC, passed into the arms of his precious Savior and Lord Jesus Christ on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at the age of 87. Brian was born in Tacoma Park, MD, on Dec 9, 1936, to father Henry Howe Richardson and mother Sylvia Hodgson Richardson. The youngest of two sons, Brian attended Chatham High School in NJ and then the State University of New York Maritime College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering. When Brian’s older brother Don married June Potter, it just so happened that June had a lovely younger sister Nancy (Bunnie) who caught Brian’s eye. Within a few weeks Brian knew that Bunnie was the one for him. They were married on June 14, 1958, and raised two sons and a daughter. They began their marriage in Newport, RI where Brian served in the Navy for two years. After the Navy they moved to NJ where Brian started a career in engineering with Ingersoll Rand Corporation. Brian stayed with Ingersoll but transitioned to sales and went back to school at Lehigh University and earned his MBA.
Brian then went on to earn a master’s degree in education from Trenton State University after which he made a career change to become a 5th grade math & science teacher. He
would stay in this role for the next 15 years. Brian & Bunnie retired from teaching in 1985 and moved to Burnsville, NC in 1989 to build their dream house. Brian was the general contractor, carpenter, electrician, plumber, roofer and all the other functions it takes to build a home (with Bunnie as his faithful assistant). They stayed in this house until 2018 and then finally retired to Southport, NC.
The most momentous event of Brian’s life was accepting Jesus as his personal savior at the age of 48. He would walk faithfully with the Lord for the rest of his life, serving in various capacities as choir member, deacon, Sunday school teacher, finance committee member, and in evangelism outreaches. Brian was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother and sister-in-law Donald and June Richardson. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bunnie Richardson; children Bill Richardson, Laura (Jim) McEnany, Ken (Patty) Richardson; grandchildren Joe McEnany, Devin Mullens, Meghan Richardson, Grace Richardson, John Richardson, Scott Richardson, and Seth Richardson.
The memorial service will be held Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Oak Island, NC.
