Chiyo Shimoji Payton, 90, of Jacksonville, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 15, 2022 at her home. A native of Miyakojima, Japan, she was born on November 6, 1931 to the late Tona and Kamado Shimoji and she was the loving wife to James W. Payton for 60 years. She was a wonderful homemaker and of the Baptist faith. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting, she made an afghan for each family member. She also enjoyed cooking which she was known best for her fried rice and coleslaw.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by sister in-law, Shirleen Gullett of Harrodsburg, KY; nieces, Toshie Kakihana of Japan, Cathy Toller and April Gullett both of KY; great nieces, Cat Toller, Melanie Toller and Julia Toller; and by her great-nephew, Matthew Gullett.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, her aunt that raised her after her parents passed away when she was young; and her niece, Christine Gullett.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 19, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Swansboro, 614 W Corbett Ave, Swansboro, NC 28584.

To know Chiyo is to know how much of an outgoing person she was, very talkative and never met a stranger. She was also very proud to be an American.

She will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her.
