Delores Wood McIntosh
August 14, 1953 - November 24, 2022

Delores Wood McIntosh, 69, passed away in the presence of loved ones on Thursday, November 24th, 2022. Born August 14, 1953, the daughter of the late Rev. Carlie Wood and Nellie Hickman Wood, she grew up a unique soul amidst a lively bunch of eight. She lived the majority of her life in Wilmington, where she not only became a devoted and loving mother, but also a force of nature providing comfort and encouragement to many—related or otherwise. Delores was preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, Doug McIntosh; they worked and played, entertained and hunkered down together. Theirs was a classic love. Additionally, two brothers, Billy Ray Wood and Johnny Wood and one sister, Ann Wood Chaffee went before her. She is survived by her children, Carly Frances and husband Venkata (Ravi), Dana Wells, and Eli Fraser—all of Wilmington and four siblings, Jim Wood and wife Teresa (Flo), Linda Wood Pope and husband Carter, Judi Wood Darroch and husband Mitch – all of Sanford, NC and Tammy Wood Drzewicki and husband Walt of Broadway, NC. As well, she was loved and is remembered by countless family and friends.
Delores was first in her family to achieve higher education, an Associates in Legal Studies from Sandhills Community College. From there she worked as a paralegal in Wilmington, NC where she met her husband, Doug. The two loved to entertain friends and family and watch sports together—an unlikely duo with Doug pulling for the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and Delores the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Carolina must have won out as their oldest daughter, Carly graduated a Tar Heel years ago.
Ever a teller of hilarious tales, Delores’s laughter and her love were outsized and healing; those gifts continue near and far. She leaves us with warm memories and yearning hearts.
A memorial service will be held 11am on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at St. Andrews on the Sound Episcopal Church, 101 Airlie Rd, Wilmington, NC 28403.
Memorial contributions can be made to Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity. Please share memories and condolences with the family at

Coastal Cremations 6 Jacksonville St., Wilmington NC 28403

I wonder if angels think about how long it’s been since heaven erupted in laughter like that? I love you Delores.

O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our sister, Delores. We thank you for giving her to us, her family and friends, to know and to love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Delores was my cousin. I always admired her beauty. I can clearly hear her distinct voice and laughter. Loved visiting Uncle Carlie and Aunt Nellie’s house and the family. My love, hugs and prayers to the family.
