George James Mealey
Born 12-6-1925 in Philadelphia, PA.
Passed Away 12-15-2016 in Wilmington, NC.
George Leaves a brother, James Johnston from Safety Harbor, Florida. Daughters Christine Mealey and Karen Holden, and twin grandchildren Caeley and Connor Holden, all from Hampstead, NC
From a poor kid in south Philly who lost his father when he was 4, George earned a masters from MIT and was an electrical engineer. He was a World War II veteran, earning several medals.
In 1967 he moved to Cincinnati Ohio where he worked for Avco Electronics, and in 1973 came up with loans enough to purchase that company and changed the name to Cincinnati Electronics which he sold in 1981 to GE Marconi.
As President/CEO he traveled the world, met and dealt with top government officials, top ranked military personnel, US and foreign dignitaries, and leading executives. He was highly respected and admired – NEVER SAY IT CAN’T BE DONE! He did accomplish many things others thought impossible.
Friends say he was a very quiet unknown humanitarian impacting many lives in so many ways – He did make the world a better place for so many people.
In his retirement he traveled and settled in Wilmington to be with his grandchildren, painted, wrote, played tennis and golf, enjoyed fine dining and wines.
He always had a lesson to teach, advice to give, and people to influence.
