Georgianna Irene Jenkins, affectionately known as ” Joy ” to her family and friends, passed away
on May 15, 2024, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Born on January 13, 1949, in Montgomery,
West Virginia to George Hannah Newman, Sr. and Eula Louise Jenkins, Joy was a beloved
daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Joy’s life was marked by her unwavering faith in the Lord and her deep love for her family. She
had an infectious laugh and a joyful spirit that touched everyone she encountered. Her love for
dancing and making a joyful noise to the Lord brought light (and laughter) into the lives of those
around her.
Throughout her life, Joy demonstrated immense compassion for others. She always made time
to care for those less fortunate than herself. Her home was always open to anyone in need of
food or shelter; there was never a shortage of love or generosity within its walls.
Her brothers George Hannah and Shawn Patrick proceeded her in death. She is survived by
brothers Richard and Michael; sisters Christine, Jane, Serena, Eula, and Donnita; daughter
Tyria Candelaria; son Chris Jenkins; granddaughter Aneulena Barber; great grandson Amarè
Darrell-Richard Barber; great granddaughter Aubrielle Eulah Barber.
The celebration of Joy’s life will take place on May 26th where friends and loved ones will
gather to honor her memory. The location of the home going celebration is 423 Redwood Road
Wilmington, N.C. 28412 at 12:00 noon.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the New Hanover Regional Medical
Center Hospice nurses, the Veterans Administration, and Coastal Cremation and Funeral
Services for their compassionate care during Joy’s final days. Their support provided comfort
not only to Joy but also to all who loved her dearly.
In honoring Georgianna Irene Jenkins’ legacy, we remember a woman who loved hard—a
woman who lived out love every day with trust and faith in God.
Services are in the care of Coastal Cremations, 6 Jacksonville Street, Wilmington, NC 28403.
