It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of Hugh Alexander Johnston (Carolina Shores, NC). Hugh passed away on November 15, 2024 surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with Covid-19. He was 73 years old.
Born in Nyack, New York, Hugh was the son of the late Everett and Ethel Johnston. He is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Marilyn. Together they have three children, Pamela Miller (David), Alicia Evans (Kenneth), and Bryan Johnston. Hugh was a proud Pop to his six grandchildren, Laurie (23), Riley (13), Jacob (11), Logan (11), Zoe (8), and Ella (8). Hugh is also survived by his sister, Carol Layton (Larry) and his two brothers, David Johnston (Judie), and Jimmy Johnston. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and grand pups who he cherished.
Hugh graduated from Clarkstown High School in 1969 and then attended Alfred State University. Hugh had a long and successful career of 36 years at United States Gypsum in Stony Point, New York. He began his career as a mechanic and completed his tenure as General Foreman.
Hugh spent the first half of his life in New York where he raised his children. Upon retirement, he and his wife relocated to Carolina Shores, North Carolina. Hugh loved North Carolina and developed many cherished friendships. He was an avid bowler, spending much of the week at the bowling alley. It was his absolute favorite pastime that he shared with his wife and many friends on his bowling leagues. Hugh had a passion for classic cars and owned a variety throughout his life bringing them to car shows in both states. He spent his free time going to the gym, enjoying dinners all over town, and playing cards with friends.
Above all, Hugh was a devoted father, husband, grandfather, and friend. On many occasions he traveled to New York to do various projects at each of his children’s houses. He was incredibly selfless, creative, and handy. Hugh would do anything for the people he loved. The world has lost a truly wonderful person.
Services will be held privately for the family. To honor Hugh’s life, a celebration of life will be held in the Spring. For those of you who knew him, you know he would not want anyone to grieve or send anything. However, Hugh was deeply impacted by the damage and devastation caused by the recent hurricane that destroyed much of western North Carolina, and he chose to assist with the recovery efforts. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting the recovery efforts by donating to the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund at https://pay.payitgov.com/ncdonations .
Arrangements are in the care of Coastal Cremations of Carolina Shores.

I’m so sorry, I didn’t know. I was out of town. Hugh, aka “Drew” was a very sweet man. He put my windows in for me. He wouldn’t take a dime. I remember playing Mexican Dominoes with him. He will be greatly missed!

We are so sorry for your loss. We bowled on the same bowling league with Hugh for many years. Hugh was always so kind and friendly. Always ready to encourage us and cheer us on when we bowled a good frame. He will always be remembered fondly. We are praying for the family as they go thru this season with this heavy loss. God bless you all.
