Jean Michel Barsa
February 9, 1939 - August 10, 2023

We are immensely sad to announce the passing of our beloved Jean Michel Barsa,
84, of Wilmington, NC. He died as he lived, surrounded by family and loved ones,
and at peace with the world. He was and remains the light of our lives and taught
by his good example how to live and love and thrive.
Jean was born in Damascus, Syria, and grew up in Syria and Palestine before
embarking on the challenge of moving to Germany by himself and working
construction and other jobs while attending university and medical school. After
his medical training he joined his family in the United States and for many years
served as a radiation oncologist at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York. He was a
dedicated physician whose patients spoke fondly of his compassion and good
cheer. Years later, one of his patients approached a cousin in New York, noticed a
name tag that read “Barsa,” and told the cousin how Jean had saved his life.
He was the kind of man no one ever forgot. He loved classical music, travel,
intellectual debate, dancing, hiking in the mountains, and smoking his pipe on a
Sunday afternoon. He loved cooking for his family and was known for the most
amazing tabbouli and tuna salads, scrambled eggs, and the best Bloody Marys. He
was never happier than when surrounded by family and loved ones.
He is survived by his wife of many years, Birgit Barsa, his children Rudolf
Schmid, Michael Barsa, Nicole Hunn, and Renee Barsa, his grandchildren Taylor
Hunn, Timothy Hunn, Alexander (Sacha) Barsa-Yuracko, and Katherine (Katja)
A celebration of Jean’s life will be held on Sunday, September 10, from 11am to 2
pm, at the Country Club of Landfall, 800 Sun Runner Place, Wilmington, NC.
In lieu of flowers, Jean’s family ask that well-wishers consider honoring his legacy
by making a donation to Roc Solid Foundation, a local non-profit dedicated to
supporting children diagnosed with cancer and their families. To donate, text JEAN
