John Gilbert Smith, Sr., 77, of Wilmington, NC, our loving husband and father, went home to be with the Lord on April 9th, 2022. He was born March 8th, 1945 in Grafton W. Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Lindsey Smith, Margaret Mae Brinkley, and his son, (Gil) John Gilbert Smith, Jr.
He worked as an Auto Tech. for over 40 years in and around the area. He was a volunteer firefighter with the Winter Park Volunteer Fire Department in the 70’s and early 80’s. Also a life member of the BASS federation fishing in many Bass Clubs and a member of the Long Bluff Hunting Club until health reasons caused him to retire.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Phyllis, children, Tom Smith, Ron Smith, Brenda Patterson (David), Pam Pierce (Allen), Mike Smith (Debbie), Curtis Smith (Brenda) and Becky Griffin (Greg) and Daughter in love, Cheryl Smith. 10 grandchildren; Magan West, A.J. Pierce (Brittany), Amanda Smith, Gage Pierce (Michelle), Brandon Smith (Brittany), Tori Neal (Brian), Adam Smith, Alexis Patterson, Brianna Griffin, and Baylee Griffin. 7 great grandchildren; Franklin, Andrew, Rosabella, Everleigh, Leia, Willow, and Emerson. Three brothers and three sisters. Special friends, Fred Wells family, Johnny Mercer and Pastor Eugene and Gail Ridley.
A floating Celebration of Life will be held May 21st from 3-5 pm at Hampstead Community Building, 14435 US 17, Hampstead, NC 28443, for John and our son, Gil who passed December 7th, 2021.
