Katherine Ward Gaines (Kathy) passed away peacefully on February 13, 2024, with her two beloved girls by her side.
She was born on September 28, 1947, in Hendersonville, NC to her parents, Furman and Dora Ward. She was everything to them… and them to her. She grew up in Florida and later returned to North Carolina to attend Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte where she proudly obtained her nursing degree as a Registered Nurse. She dedicated her entire adult life to taking care of others as a gifted nurse with a special love for caring for seniors. Throughout her career she had many high-level titles and responsibilities, but it was the simple nurse in her that was her true calling and showed through in all her work.
Kathy married Bill Groome in August of 1967 and started a family with roots in Asheboro, NC. Besides “nurse”, she was blessed to have two of most important titles of her life… “Mom” and “Gigi”. Her dedication and love for her two daughters, three grandchildren and her precious great-granddaughter was immeasurable and brought about many wonderful memories, lots and lots of laughter and life lessons. She later remarried Roger Gaines in November of 2008 and they enjoyed years together traveling and experiencing all that life has to offer. Kathy loved all her family including her grandparents, many aunts, uncles and cousins and her dear friends she had throughout her life. That love will go on forever.
She is survived by her husband Roger Gaines of Anderson, SC; daughter Kim Groome Allgood of Oak Island, NC; daughter, Jennifer Groome of High Point, NC; grandson Chase Bouchillon, his fiancé` Jossalin Davis and great-granddaughter Emery Katherine Bouchillon of Old Fort, NC; granddaughter Bailey Allgood Queen and husband Matthew of Mebane, NC; grandson Carter Allgood and his fiancé Joselyne Gonzalez of Asheboro, NC; stepson and family Greg and Melissa Gaines, Sophie and Scarlett of Greenville, SC.
A memorial and celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, March 16 at the First Baptist Church of Hendersonville, NC at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your local American Red Cross which was an organization dear to her heart.
Kim, Jennifer and Roger would like to thank the amazing nurses, doctors and all staff who cared for her during the difficult two weeks she spent at Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport, NC and Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Neuroscience Center in Wilmington, NC.
