Larry Lewallen, born Herbert Lawrence Lewallen Jr. on May 10, 1936, passed away on April 23, 2017 at 80 years old.
The oldest child of Herbert Lawrence & Janey Rickard Lewallen, he was a loving brother to his younger siblings Bonnie, Rickie and Mike.
He attended Walkertown High School where he enjoyed playing baseball and football until his graduation in 1955. He attend N.C. State University in the fall of 1955 before leaving to join the work force. He worked for 35 years as an electrical draftsman for AT&T, retiring in 1990.
Larry met the love of his life, Brenda Jones, on a blind date in 1959. He made her Mrs. Lewallen in 1961 and the two were together for 55 years. He often said that meeting Brenda was his fondest memory.
Larry’s only child, Shawn, was born in 1970. He took great joy teaching his son how to be a good man and passing along his love of sports. He spent his son’s youth coaching him in baseball and football.
Larry had a passion for coaching football, first for The Winston-Salem Greyhounds Pop Warner teams where he helped start their winning tradition. Later he went on to coach the Parkland high school junior varsity football team with his good friend Gary “Jug” Fultz. During his tenure there they managed to coach the JV team to their first undefeated season.
Larry loved playing golf which was introduced to him by his younger brother Mike. He enjoyed spending his weekends out on the course with his father Herbert, brother Mike and many other friends.
He was a dedicated Christian and member of Crews United Methodist Church. He was fond of singing in the choir for many years along side his father Herbert and sister Rickie.
He is survived by wife Brenda, son Shawn, daughter-in-law Rachel, grandson Hunter, granddaughter Janie and brother Mike, and sister-in-law Monica. Also, his dear aunt Joann Flowers, brother-in-law Steve Jones, sister-in-law Melody and brother-in-law Bill Tedder, nephews Kyle Goodson, Nathan Goodson and Joseph Jones and nieces Amber Sharpe, Stella Lewallen, Autumn Hayes and Amy Garcee.
He was proceeded in death by his father Herbert, mother Janey, sisters Bonnie Williams and Rickie Tedder and nephew Eric Scott Lewallen.
The Memorial Service for this beloved man will be held Saturday at 2pm on May 6th at Crews United Methodist Church (4150 Reidsville Rd. Winston-Salem, NC 27101).
Memorials maybe made to Crews United Methodist Church and Lower Cape Fear Hospice & Life Care Center (1414 Physicians Dr. Wilmington, NC 28401).
