Marlene M Johnson, 84, of Ocean Isle Beach, formerly of Greensboro, NC, died Monday May 20, 2024, at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick. Marlene was predeceased by her parents Modena and Roy Jones of Greensboro, her husband Bobby Johnson, brothers Graham Matthews (Betty) and Johnny Jones, sister Wanda Kersey (Harry) and her dog Ginger. She is survived by her son David Johnson, daughter Donna Marshall (Tommy), brother Rodney Jones (Sherry), sister Jane Dovan (Emil), as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Marlene worked for 30 years as a urological nurse before “retiring” to Ocean Isle Beach where she continued work in medical billing, bookkeeping services, and as owner of a used bookstore. Over the years she participated in local and national bowling competitions, church choir and other singing events, pursuing interests such as crafts, bike riding (several 100-mile treks), traveling, and hiking Portugal’s Camino Pilgrim Trail at age 74. She enjoyed hosting her family’s annual Christmas Eve party as well as spending time camping at the coast or vacationing at the family beach house. Marlene’s joyful enthusiasm for life and always-ready wit was evident throughout her life and even in her last few years with Alzheimer’s disease. She will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date at Glenwood Presbyterian Church, Greensboro, NC. Coastal Cremations of Carolina Shores, NC is assisting the family.

Donna, Tommy, Jane and family, I am so heartbroken over the news of Marlene’s passing. She was such a wonderful person and so kind and loving to me. She was a very special person, kids and dogs were attracted to her almost immediately because she was so open and friendly. She will be so deeply missed by many. Love and prayers, Gigi
