Thomas Harvey Patterson
March 19, 1937 - March 11, 2023

Thomas Harvey Patterson, age 85, passed away peacefully at Lower Cape Fear Life Care Center on
March 11, 2023. Tom was a gifted musician, beginning with mastery in Bluegrass banjo and moving on
to leading praise and worship music with the guitar. He was also a gifted writer and a teacher of the
Word, but he will be remembered most for his faith in God, his devotion to serving God, his kindness
and compassion for people who were hurting, his generous spirit, and his love and commitment to
Tom was born in Los Angeles California on March 19, 1937. He served in the US Army 10th Infantry
Division and the Second Armored Division from 1955 to 1959. After being honorably discharged from
the army, Tom entered the University of California, Riverside. He graduated in 1964 with a degree in
political science and went on to graduate school at UCLA majoring in symbolic logic. He began his
working career at Union Bank in Los Angeles, CA, then moved to New Jersey in 1971 to serve as Vice
President of Systems and Procedures at Bankers National Life Insurance Company, Parsippany, NJ from
1971-1978. The remainder of his working career was spent as Vice President, Mutual Benefit Life,
Newark, NJ and as Vice President, Securities Group, Pershing, Jersey City, NJ, taking a 4-year sabbatical
from 1988–1991 to devote himself to full-time ministry to prisoners with AIDS at Trenton State Prison,
Trenton, NJ. He retired from Pershing in 2007.
Tom will be greatly missed by friends and family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Janice
Keller Patterson; children, Chris (Debbie) Patterson, Katie (Chris) Cirando, Paul (Tricie) Patterson, Steve
(Mary Beth) Patterson; 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
